Serial restaurateur and Tex-Mex aficionado Ken Walker has just announced his departure from his most recent Shanghai venture La Mesa in Julu Lu's More Than Eat complex. Previously, Walker was involved with Bubba's BBQ, Jalapeno and Bordertown.
Just this past May, we went to check out the food and awarded the venue a three-star review. We were particularly fond of the stringy queso and chips as well as Mexican grilled corn and various tacos.
According to Walker, his local partners wanted to run the business on their own, and he is already looking for a space to launch something in the same style. In the meantime, he will be doing pop-ups around town. Time will tell how the concept will hold up in his absence.
Read the statement from Walker below:
Dear friends and fans of La Mesa, I certainly appreciate all of the support and friendship received while I was developing the La Mesa concept over the last few months. We had some fun times and I enjoyed launching a new street-style food concept. In the end, the local partners seemed determined to run the business, on their own, without my involvement. Promises were made, and promises were broken. You’ve heard that story before right? Anyway, I wish them luck in executing my “keep it weird” style of TexMex. In the meantime, I’m seeking a new location to re-launch a “La Mesa-style” venue as I truly love and believe in this approach. I’ll also be looking to do some pop-ups with the awesome food we launched at La Mesa! Thanks and see you around!
On the bright side, Walker is planning to spend some of his newfound free time gobbling up tacos al fresco at Tacolicious and Cantina Agave. We also hear you'll see him more around The Rooster and Cages Bar and Sports.
